What is Detoxification?
Detoxification is the process in which the body breaks down harmful substances and removes them. Specifically the liver is involved in the enzymatic breakdown of fatty soluble toxins, wastes, hormones, medications, and substance and making them water soluble in order to excrete them. This is called Phase I and II of detoxification. Phase III removes harmful substances via the breath, lungs, gastrointestinal system, urinary system via the kidneys, sweat glands.
Toxicity starts in the GUT. “Although the human small intestine serves primarily as an absorptive organ for nutrients and water, it also has the ability to metabolize drugs. Interest in the small intestine as a drug-metabolizing organ has been increasing since the realization that it is probably the most important. extrahepatic site of drug biotransformation.” (1)

Why are we toxic?
Our daily diet, environmental toxins, hygiene products, stress, ect. all contribute to our oxidative or toxic burden. We breathe in thousands of toxic chemical daily both natural and man-made, consume toxic pesticides in our foods, alcohol, coffee, molds, medications, bacteria, absorb them in our fabrics, and even create them in our body. There is a lot of daily exposure and demands for our body to keep up with. The more we get exposed to toxins the less optimal detoxification function we may have.
Our detoxification systems depends highly on our diet. A diet rich GMO (genetically modified foods), processed fats, rich in omega 6s, alcohol, and high in sugar can create inflammation in body. Thus leading to improper accumulate of fat in the liver “Fatty Liver” which may negatively influence detoxification capabilities by damage to cellular function.

How to decide what to eat:
Points to remember-
• Gradually decrease significant amounts of caffeinated beverages or simple sugars.
• You should not be hungry on the a proper detox program. Eat as much of the allowed foods as you want.
• Increase your fiber intake: Ground Flax Seed, Chia Seeds, Dark leafy vegetables, Psyllium.
• Remember to drink at least two quarts 64 oz of plain, filtered, or mineral water each day, between meals.
• Avoid Strenuous or prolonged exercise during the program.
• A Nutritional Beverage should be consumed within 30 min.
